Washington, DC – Dec 15, 2009 – Ice Tea Group, LLC (ITG) announced the migration of Fujitsu Technology Solutions's (FTS) mission critical production and workflow management application from Unify/Gupta Team Developer to Microsoft .NET (C#) and Visual Studio 2008.
The migration project was completed successfully by fecher, ITG's Premium Porting Partner for Central Europe and North America, and Siemens IT Solutions and Services (SIS), which was commissioned with software maintenance by Fujitsu.
The application is used on 350 workstations and controls the production of more than 3,000 customized units per day on a continuous 24/7 production plant in Augsburg Germany.
"On a quiet day, we produce around 3,000 units," said Rafael Lehmann, Director of Production Logistics Project at FTS. At peak periods. His production team works in three shifts around the clock. They may easily produce 17,000 units and more. The large fluctuation range is part of the program in Augsburg: Since all systems are produced according to customer specifications, there basically is no make-to-stock production. "We operate like a bakery: We only deliver fresh rolls," said Lehmann smiling.
Microsoft .NET had become a company standard for their production plans and all other systems were already operating on the modern .NET platform. "Gupta was declining; it was impossible to find new programmers," said Werner Kutschker, SIS Project Manager, explaining the increasing problems. Existing software available on the market was too limited compared to the custom solution in use at Fujitsu. New .NET development would have been too costly and time consuming. "Above all, the big question remained how to replace a mission critical system without downtime", said Kutschker.
The FTS team ultimately found the solution to their dilemma: The Porting Project.
