Every now and then I get requests from my users to add a very special feature to our ERP software which, as they claim, is so important that they are dying to have it the next day.

Years ago when I was less experienced (and a little younger too) I tried to implement things as they were requested and I was proud to deliver so promptly. After a while, however, I discovered that the newly implemented features weren't used at all. That was when I decided to handle things differently. I do not accept changes anymore unless requested by at least 2 persons. And I never implement anything right away. I ask the requesting user to write down the reason why the feature is needed and what exactly they want to achieve. That forces the users to think first and make up their mind and it decreased my workload significantly.

I went even a step further, from time to time I remove a menu item or a specific function to see if somebody complains. Much to my amusement some of these desperately needed features haven't been missed since months now.
